Everything you need to know about crossing Albania's borders with a rental car.

Before You Cross

  • ! You MUST arrange cross-border authorization with your rental company at the time of booking, not at pickup.
  • ! A written authorization letter specific to your vehicle is required at the border.
  • ! Green Card insurance is needed for most countries (except Kosovo).
  • ! Not all rental companies allow cross-border travel. Check before booking.

Border Crossing Points

1 Morina (Kukës → Prizren) — main route via A1 highway, fastest option.

Kosovo is the easiest border crossing from Albania. Most rental companies allow it.

Arrange the Green Card and authorization in advance. Green Card: 40 EUR (2 weeks) + ~10 EUR/day for authorization.

Popular route for visiting Lake Ohrid. Same documentation requirements as Montenegro.

Most rental companies in Albania prohibit taking cars to Greece. Always verify before booking.

  • Green Card insurance (not needed for Kosovo)

Since January 2025, Green Card insurance is accepted in PDF format.
